IDFA Says European Regulation Will Wreak Havoc in Formula Supply Chain
The International Dairy Foods Association is asking the European Commission and U.S. government to work together to resolve a dispute about animal health attestations that the trade group says will throw the infant formula and adult nutrition supply chains "into chaos," and will cause product shortages and price increases.

Beginning Aug. 21, the regulation will take effect, and the IDFA says that European manufacturers of formula or Ensure-type products will run out of their U.S. supply by the end of the year. The IDFA says there are no alternate suppliers. Moreover, IDFA says the rule applies to products destined for U.S. military bases in Europe.
"U.S. suppliers and makers of these dairy ingredients have not received sufficient time or necessary technical guidance from the EC to effectively implement the new certificates. Therefore, U.S. suppliers and makers of these dairy ingredients are requesting an extension of the August 21, 2021 implementing date to allow more time for the U.S. and EC to reach a satisfactory resolution of this issue," the group said.
