China Objects to US Listing of Tencent, CATL as Military Firms

China’s Foreign Ministry this week objected to the U.S. Defense Department’s recent update to the list of companies with ties to the Chinese military, calling the list “discriminatory.” The Pentagon announced it had added China-based Tencent, owner of the messaging app WeChat, and CATL, a Chinese battery maker, in a notice released this week (see 2501060024).

“We urge the US to immediately correct its wrongdoings, and end the illegal unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction on Chinese companies,” a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said during a regular Jan. 7 press conference, according to an English translation provided by the Chinese Embassy in Washington. “China will take all measures necessary to firmly defend the lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies and uphold its legitimate right to development.”
