New House Bill Would Fully End Arms Embargo on Cyprus

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., introduced a bill Jan. 9 to end the arms embargo on Cyprus. The Cyprus Defense Cooperation Act was referred to the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Current law bars defense exports to Cyprus unless the island country cooperates with the U.S. to reform its anti-money laundering regulations and financial oversight and denies Russian military vessels access to ports for refueling and servicing. The State Department has determined annually for several years that Cyprus is meeting those conditions (see 2409260011).

Last year, Malliotakis and other Cyprus allies in Congress said the annual renewal requirement causes several problems, including restricting Cyprus's ability to plan and procure U.S. defense articles effectively.
