Parliament members adopted one resolution that asks the European Commission to consider sanctioning Turkish officials who have recently replaced democratically elected mayors with government-appointed trustees, mostly in Kurdish regions. They said Turkey should put in place “judicial reforms to abolish the trustee system, especially given the impact of these violations on local governance in Kurdish-majority areas,” or else the EU should add the responsible officials to its human rights sanctions regime.
Another resolution calls on the EU to sanction Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega; his wife, Rosario Murillo; and their “inner circle.” Parliament condemned the Ortega regime's “systemic human rights violations” against Nicaraguan citizens and its persecution of religious leaders.
